Pinot Noir
When it comes to Pinot Noir it's all about “Pinosity” - the ultimate expression of true pinot noir characteristics. We believe Pinot Noir should be elegant with silky fruit while young, showing bright cherry spice notes, and yet age gracefully, developing richer tannins and darker brambly forest fruits with poise. The focus is on subtle yet powerful elegance with a core of sweet fruit and succulent palate weight.
Two of our vineyards - Taylor River and Ben Morven - supply 100% of Wither Hills' premium Pinot Noir grapes.
For me, making Pinot is the holy grail!
It's the prince of all the classic varieties. It is notoriously fickle, yet worth all the blood, sweat and tears when you get it right. New Zealand Pinot Noir is the next global star and Marlborough will be at the forefront of this assault.

More than a decade's experience has shown us the importance of taking the time to focus on quality and attention to detail to ensure all the different nuances, unique to each specific site and clone, capture Marlborough's Turangawaewae.
Pinot Gris
A relatively new member of the Wither Hills wine family, our first Pinot Gris wine was released in 2007. This fruit for the wine is sourced from our Wairau Valley vineyards including our Rarangi vineyard.
I was lucky enough to undergo all my “official” wine education in the UK. This meant the first Pinot Gris wines I tried hailed from either Northern Italy or Alsace in France. These styles remain firm favourites: the Grigio from Italy for its searingly dry freshness and long lasting minerality, the Gris from Alsace for its rich, oily texture, and ripe fruit character with a touch of sweetness that matched the hearty local food.
Thankfully, you now get the best of both styles in many New World wines. The Wither Hills Pinot Gris is a perfect example of this great combination!

We've made a Pinot Gris in a dry style, showing exquisite varietal characteristics of ripe limes, quince, honeysuckle, pear and peach. A small parcel is fermented in ancient French oak barrels, enhancing the wine's palate weight and texture. The wine is bottled carefully to retain and capture the delicate aromatics, lush flavours and subtle palate weight - hallmarks of a classic Marlborough Pinot Gris.
Sauvignon Blanc
Wine lovers the world over are entranced with Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Approachable, fresh and exploding with bright, vibrant flavours and heady aromatics, we like to think our Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc delivers style and substance.
The Sauvignon Blanc fruit is sourced from selected vineyards strategically sited throughout the Wairau Valley, encompassing the total spectrum of what Sauvignon Blanc has to offer. This in turn gives our winemakers the greatest possible array of aromas and flavours to meld into stunning seamless Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
When I moved to Marlborough from Australia, I had tried a fair amount of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the bottle. However, starting at Wither Hills, I tasted a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc berry on the vine for the first time. It tasted just like what you get in the bottle - no diffference. For me, it was kind of a viticultural epiphany!

To ensure integrity of the vineyard and to provide the greatest possible blending individual vineyard expression, all the fruit from these vineyards is kept separate throughout the winemaking process.
Once in the winery, the Sauvignon Blanc is gently pressed, cold settled, racked and cool fermented, with selected yeast strains especially chosen to bring out the most of the vineyard's unique aromatics and flavours. With Sauvignon Blanc, it is all about delicate handling to ensure we capture and then retain the remarkable freshness and fruit purity that is the key to Wither Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
