Spiral Islands

delicate cloud lighting forms out over, and mirror, island seat forms below, like the  puffy white clouds that sit over the many islands scattered across the pacific ocean. aotearoa, the maori name for new zealand, means land of the long white cloud.

spirals included in the presentation are:
carved wooden pebble bowls in bamboo
semi-upholstered seat form islands
translucent cloud form lights

what are the basic building blocks of nature?
how do these re-appear at different scales?
how can a designer use the same starting point to create a wide variety of objects?
in how many ways can a single spiral line be used?

pattern

like many artists working in new zealand i am inevitably in¬uenced by its strong landscape.  one aspect that particularly interests me is pattern and the way in which the same pattern can be seen to repeat at widely varying scales. for example the ventricles of lungs, trees and river systems seen from the air, all bifurcate in a similar manner. this inner structure of growth in nature is the basis of life. in nature, pattern is not usually decoration, it is the outward manifestation of inner structure. investigation of structure has always been one of my primary driving forces.

spiral

one of the most basic elements of growth in nature is the spiral, one which is particularly relevant to new zealand. i am investigating how one single spiral pattern can be used to create a variety of di¬erent forms/structures at di¬erent scales. so far we have used our cnc router to carve out three wooden bowls in di¬erent descending spiral cuts. we are now taking these identical spirals and using them as the basis for three dimensional large scale forms which are made solely from outer surfaces or skins. using di¬erent materials, these forms can then become either a translucent light, or a seat with alternating spirals of wood and upholstery. the lights are hung directly over the seat forms and exactly replicate them in their own material.

Don't miss seeing NNancy a generative installation by designer Guy Keulemans, which explores the effect of structural growth on spatial perception and experience. The structure is derived from a simple fixed angle module which becomes increasingly complex as it grows, mirroring patterns found in nature, but within a precise and artifactual framework.  Designer Guy Keulemans will be at at pyd every Tuesday working on the project's evolution so come down to pyd and watch this incredible artwork take shape.

James works only with car parts; grille slats, window surrounds, headlamp rims and the like, because it’s easy to work with and can be MIG welded with minimal discolouration or distortion. Whether the purpose of the sculpture is for a private collection, public art, or simply a “must have”, James Corbett’s sculptures are undoubtedly some of the finest examples of assemblage that you would be likely to encounter anywhere in the world.
